    MiNL: Micro-images based Neural Representation for Light Fields

    Traditional representations for light fields can be separated into two types: explicit representation and implicit representation. Unlike explicit representation that represents light fields as Sub-Aperture Images (SAIs) based arrays or Micro-Images (MIs) based lenslet images, implicit representation treats light fields as neural networks, which is inherently a continuous representation in contrast to discrete explicit representation. However, at present almost all the implicit representations for light fields utilize SAIs to train an MLP to learn a pixel-wise mapping from 4D spatial-angular coordinate to pixel colors, which is neither compact nor of low complexity. Instead, in this paper we propose MiNL, a novel MI-wise implicit neural representation for light fields that train an MLP + CNN to learn a mapping from 2D MI coordinates to MI colors. Given the micro-image's coordinate, MiNL outputs the corresponding micro-image's RGB values. Light field encoding in MiNL is just training a neural network to regress the micro-images and the decoding process is a simple feedforward operation. Compared with common pixel-wise implicit representation, MiNL is more compact and efficient that has faster decoding speed (\textbf{Γ—\times80∼\sim180} speed-up) as well as better visual quality (\textbf{1∼\sim4dB} PSNR improvement on average)

    Analysis of 15 cases of oesophageal hiatus hernia in children

    In this review the clinical features, operative procedure and outcome of surgery in 15 children with oesophageal hiatus hernia is presented. The commonest type was theΒ  sliding hiatus hernia. The main presenting clinical features included repeated vomiting, anaemia and malnutrition. At surgery, either an abdominal or a thoracic approach was used. The abdominal approach was found to be less traumatic and easier than the thoracic one. Postoperatively, gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) was found to be a common early complication in cases treated with simple repair of the hiatus plus fvration of the stomach to the diaphragm. Repair plus Nissen operation prevented GOR and was found to give the best results

    A full Bayesian partition model for identifying hypo- and hyper-methylated loci from single nucleotide resolution sequencing data

    Publisher's PDFBACKGROUND: DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification that plays important roles on gene regulation. Study of whole-genome bisulfite sequencing and reduced representation bisulfite sequencing brings the availability of DNA methylation at single CpG resolution. The main interest of study on DNA methylation data is to test the methylation difference under two conditions of biological samples. However, the high cost and complexity of this sequencing experiment limits the number of biological replicates, which brings challenges to the development of statistical methods. RESULTS: Bayesian modeling is well known to be able to borrow strength across the genome, and hence is a powerful tool for high-dimensional- low-sample- size data. In order to provide accurate identification of methylation loci, especially for low coverage data, we propose a full Bayesian partition model to detect differentially methylated loci under two conditions of scientific study. Since hypo-methylation and hyper-methylation have distinct biological implication, it is desirable to differentiate these two types of differential methylation. The advantage of our Bayesian model is that it can produce one-step output of each locus being either equal-, hypo- or hyper-methylated locus without further post-hoc analysis. An R package named as MethyBayes implementing the proposed full Bayesian partition model will be submitted to the bioconductor website upon publication of the manuscript. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed full Bayesian partition model outperforms existing methods in terms of power while maintaining a low false discovery rate based on simulation studies and real data analysis including bioinformatics analysis.University of Delaware.     In vitro corrosion behavior and cytocompatibility of pure Fe implanted with Ta

    In this study, pure Fe was surface-modified by Ta ion implantation with different incident ion doses. Its surface morphology and chemical composition were investigated using atomic force microscopy and auger electron spectroscopy. Results showed that Ta ion implantation led to the formation of Ta/Fe oxide mixtures at the outmost surface (60–80 nm in thickness) of the implanted layer. Results from electrochemical measurements and immersion tests indicated that the corrosion rate of the pure Fe in simulated body fluids can be accelerated after the Ta ion implantation. The in vitro cell culture results showed that the cytocompatibility of osteoblasts on the pure Fe has been significantly improved by applying the Ta ion implantation

    Toxicity of microcystins in the isolated hepatocytes of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.)

    The toxicity of hepatotoxic microcystins produced mainly by Microcystis aeruginosa in mammals and fishes was well studied in recent years. However, there were scarcely reports in toxic effects of microcystins on isolated hepatocytes of fishes, especially investigation of microcystin-induced apoptosis and/or necrosis in carp hepatocytes. In the present study, the isolated hepatocytes of common carp were exposed to various concentrations of microcystins (0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, 1000 mu g L-1) for 2, 4, 8, 16 and 24 h, respectively, and cytotoxicity of microcystins in the toxin-treated cells was determined. Results of this study showed that cytotoxicity of microcystins on carp hepatocytes was time and dose-dependent, and the approximate LC50 of microcystins in carp hepatocytes was 169.2 mu g L-1. The morphological changes typical of apoptosis, such as blebbing of cell membrane, condensation and fragmentation of cell nucleus were observed in the hepatocytes exposed to microcystins (1, 10 and 100 mu g L-1) using fluorescence and differential interference contrast microscopy. Agarose gel electrophoresis of DNA demonstrated a typical apoptotic "ladder pattern" in microcystin-treated hepatocytes after 16 h of exposure. Results of the present study indicated that the form of cell death in microcystin-treated hepatocytes depend on the exposure dose of toxin. When lower concentration of microcystins (10 and 100 mu g L-1) was used for exposure, carp hepatocytes died in apoptosis while, when higher one used (1000 mu g L-1), they died in the form of necrosis.     A Brassica napus Lipase Locates at the Membrane Contact Sites Involved in Chloroplast Development

    Background: Fatty acids synthesized in chloroplast are transported to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) for triacylglycerols (TAGs) resembling. The development of chloroplast also requires lipids trafficking from ER to chloroplast. The membrane contact sites (MCSs) between ER and chloroplast has been demonstrated to be involved for the trafficking of lipids and proteins. Lipids trafficking between ER and chloroplast is often accompanied by lipids interconversion. However, it is rarely known how lipids interconversion happens during their trafficking. Methodology/Principal Findings: We cloned a lipase gene from Brassica napus L., designated as BnCLIP1. Green fluorescence protein (GFP)-tagged BnCLIP1 was shown to locate at the MCSs between ER and chloroplasts in tobacco leaves. Heterogeneous expression of BnCLIP1 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (pep4) reduced the total amount of fatty acid. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed that the truncated BnCLIP1 had a substrate preference for C16:0 lipids in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (pep4). To probe the physiological function of BnCLIP1, two Brassica napus lines with different oil-content were introduced to investigate the transcript patterns of BnCLIP1 during seed development. Intriguingly, the transcript level of BnCLIP1 was found to be immediately up-regulated during the natural seed senescence of both lines; the transcription response of BnCLIP1 in the high oil-content seeds was faster than the lower ones, suggesting a potential role of BnCLIP1 in affecting seed oil synthesis via regulating chloroplast integrity.     Effects of vaccines on clinical characteristics of convalescent adult patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant: A retrospective study

    IntroductionThe protective effect of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines has become a global focus due to Omicron variant pandemic. The effects of various SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are diverse. However, studies on the effect of domestic vaccines on clinical characteristics in convalescent adult patients infected with the Omicron variant are lacking.MethodsIn this retrospective, single-center cohort study, the effect of three domestic vaccines on clinical characteristics of convalescent adult patients infected with the Omicron variant was investigated in the initial largest outbreak of the Omicron variant infection between January and February 2022 in Tianjin, China. The primary endpoint was COVID-19 severity and the secondary endpoints were re-positive results on nucleic acid tests, liver and kidney function, and inflammation levels during recovery.ResultsA total of 320 adult patients infected with the Omicron variant were enrolled, including 296 post-vaccination and 24 unvaccinated patients. The median age of the unvaccinated patients was higher than that of vaccinated patients, but no significant difference was detected in the sex composition ratio between the different groups. Binary logistic regression results suggested that Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccine was an independent protective factor for relieving the severity of the Omicron variant infection. Regrettably, the vaccines did not showed any protective effect on the liver and kidney function of convalescent adult patients. Three domestic vaccines significantly relieved inflammation and increased the SARS-CoV-2-specific antibody levels. Furthermore, Sinovac and CanSino vaccines had a better immune stimulation effect on increasing T lymphocytes levels in convalescent adult patients. In addition, three domestic vaccines have protective effects on preventing re-detectable positive (RP) result in convalescent adult patients.ConclusionAlthough the three domestic vaccines cannot prevent the infection of the Omicron variant, it has a significant protective effect in adult patients. This study supports the policy of accelerating to vaccination worldwide combat the evolving and mutating SARS-CoV-2.DiscussionOmicron spreads faster and might escape antibodies more readily than previous variants, increasing the cases of reinfection and breakthrough infections in vaccinated people. Although vaccinated people are likely to have a much lower risk of severe disease from Omicron infection, many issues still need to be considered. Concerns about lower vaccine efficacy because of new variants might have changed our understanding of the COVID-19 endgame, disabusing the world of the notion that global vaccination is by itself adequate for controlling SARS-CoV-2 infection. The current data showed that vaccination with three domestic SARS-CoV-2 vaccines alleviates the disease severity of adult patients with COVID-19, reduces the inflammation level and the RP rate of convalescent adult patients, and enhances body’s defense against the virus in convalescent adult patients.
